Thanks!
Thank you to everyone for getting the $2 in to me in a timely manner. I will be off this weekend to buy the supplies we will need to construct the houses next week. We will be working on our houses on Monday and Thursday next week.
ALSO: A reminder to everyone that the Christmas Hampers will be going out early Wednesday morning next week....it would be awesome if everyone contributed something to make a family's Christmas joyous. We have an adult female, an adult male and a 6 year old girl as our family this year. Please help support us by giving what you can. Together we can make a difference!
The powerpoint presentations are due next Friday and must be handed in to my school folder. If any students is having trouble doing this, please let me know and I can help. Students have been given 2 hours to work on the Powerpoint on the computer and 2 hours to find information in class. Friday is the deadline. There usually is someone in the computer lab at lunch, so there is time to finish them off if you do not have the program at home.
If you have any questions, please contact me.

Christmas Hamper
I am including the letter that is being sent home today. I realize that it is for 8M, but I have let 8S students know that if they would like to contribute to the hamper that they can as well.
December 7, 2009
Dear Parents,
This is just a brief note to inform you of our hamper family this year. 8B and 8M will be cooperating to provide a hamper for a family of three that consists of an adult female, an adult male and a 6 year old girl. It would be greatly appreciated if each student could bring a couple of items to share with this family during this time of giving. If you have any questions, please contact one of the classroom teachers at the school.
Wishing your family a Wonderful Christmas Season and a very Fulfilling New Year!
Merry Christmas!

Order of Operations with Fractions!
Yesterday, we took our order of operations (BEDMAS) and used it with fractions. A few important things for students (& parents) to remember are:
1. That order of operations must also be followed when dealing with fractions.
2. That Multiplying and Dividing are treated as equals.....we do whichever one comes first in the equation.
3. That when we are Adding and Subtracting fractions, we must have common denominators! That means that we are looking for equivalent fractions.
Next week we will be going over this concept and starting a few of our projects: the scale drawing of the sturgeon and the Gingerbread Houses.
** Remember to get your $2 in to pay for the Gingerbread House materials**

Letter about Gingerbread House assignment!
December 1, 2009
Dear Grade 8 Parents:
As part of our Grade 8 Math class, we like to encourage students to use Math in the “real world”. Therefore, we will be making Gingerbread Houses in Math. We will be incorporating area, volume and ratios in our work.
In order to fulfill this project, we are asking that students bring $2 to help with the cost of the materials for making the houses. We are hoping to have this money collected by Monday, December 7, 2009. Students are to hand this money in to their Math teachers by Monday.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Blocker or Mrs. Mikoluff at the school.
Thank you for your time!
