Thanks!
Thank you to everyone for getting the $2 in to me in a timely manner. I will be off this weekend to buy the supplies we will need to construct the houses next week. We will be working on our houses on Monday and Thursday next week.
ALSO: A reminder to everyone that the Christmas Hampers will be going out early Wednesday morning next week....it would be awesome if everyone contributed something to make a family's Christmas joyous. We have an adult female, an adult male and a 6 year old girl as our family this year. Please help support us by giving what you can. Together we can make a difference!
The powerpoint presentations are due next Friday and must be handed in to my school folder. If any students is having trouble doing this, please let me know and I can help. Students have been given 2 hours to work on the Powerpoint on the computer and 2 hours to find information in class. Friday is the deadline. There usually is someone in the computer lab at lunch, so there is time to finish them off if you do not have the program at home.
If you have any questions, please contact me.

Christmas Hamper
I am including the letter that is being sent home today. I realize that it is for 8M, but I have let 8S students know that if they would like to contribute to the hamper that they can as well.
December 7, 2009
Dear Parents,
This is just a brief note to inform you of our hamper family this year. 8B and 8M will be cooperating to provide a hamper for a family of three that consists of an adult female, an adult male and a 6 year old girl. It would be greatly appreciated if each student could bring a couple of items to share with this family during this time of giving. If you have any questions, please contact one of the classroom teachers at the school.
Wishing your family a Wonderful Christmas Season and a very Fulfilling New Year!
Merry Christmas!

Order of Operations with Fractions!
Yesterday, we took our order of operations (BEDMAS) and used it with fractions. A few important things for students (& parents) to remember are:
1. That order of operations must also be followed when dealing with fractions.
2. That Multiplying and Dividing are treated as equals.....we do whichever one comes first in the equation.
3. That when we are Adding and Subtracting fractions, we must have common denominators! That means that we are looking for equivalent fractions.
Next week we will be going over this concept and starting a few of our projects: the scale drawing of the sturgeon and the Gingerbread Houses.
** Remember to get your $2 in to pay for the Gingerbread House materials**

Letter about Gingerbread House assignment!
December 1, 2009
Dear Grade 8 Parents:
As part of our Grade 8 Math class, we like to encourage students to use Math in the “real world”. Therefore, we will be making Gingerbread Houses in Math. We will be incorporating area, volume and ratios in our work.
In order to fulfill this project, we are asking that students bring $2 to help with the cost of the materials for making the houses. We are hoping to have this money collected by Monday, December 7, 2009. Students are to hand this money in to their Math teachers by Monday.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Blocker or Mrs. Mikoluff at the school.
Thank you for your time!

Comparing Rates
Greetings everyone! Students are receiving their Math tests on Percent back today. If they did not pass, they have the opportunity to get 50% by doing questions over on the test and handing it in no later than Friday. Also, they must have the questions correct in order to get to the 50%. Also, students have been given their Engrade reports and any and all missing assignments completed and handed in by Friday. I am including the Math notes from today.

Well, we did not have students in class today, but I did manage to get caught up with my marking. Engrade is now up to date! I will be printing out individual Engrade reports for each student. This way they will be aware of what they are missing in regards to assignments. Students will have until Friday to get any and all missing assignments handed in. After Friday, I will not be marking them. Report cards will be coming out on December 3rd and my marks must be into the computer system well before that.
Also, I am not available on Parent-Teacher evening this Thursday, November 19th. However, I am looking at setting up a day where I can set up my own appointments after school. I will get back to you as soon as I figure out what day I am able to stay. I am looking at probably doing the meetings from 4- 6:30 or so. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
Thank you....take care.

Digestive System
We have begun the Digestive system in 8M....we will be starting it tomorrow with 8S. Our focus is on what the different parts of the system do and where they are located. We will also look at how the Digestive system and Circulatory system are connected. Am trying to get my smartboard info on here....but running into some stumbling blocks. Will continue......
As for Math, students will be expected to have pages 18-21 completed from their booklet by tomorrow, with the exception of questions #9 and #10 on page 19.
Some students are choosing not to copy the notes down from Math class and then complaining that they do not know what to do. It is NECESSARY for students to copy the notes as I go over the questions step by step and show how to solve them. Not copying the notes will be a huge detriment when it comes time to completing assignments, studying for tests or reviewing for the exam. Notes are not an option.....students are expected and required to copy them.

Trying to figure it out!
Still working on trying to get our smartboard info and notes on this blog.
We will be having a short quiz on Monday (the 19th) on Percents in Math.
For science, students were given a booklet on the heart. This will be corrected next science class and will be for marks.
Also, Mrs. Zieske shared her pet with us today. Malibu is a corn snake and was passed around and talked about the entire day. Pretty exciting! We will be looking at the difference between a human heart and what a reptile's heart looks like and how it works.
